Short answer: for anything beyond a fortnight in Paramaribo, an apartment beats a hotel room — you get a kitchen, and Paramaribo is a city where cooking is much cheaper than eating out twice a day. Three serviced-apartment properties are currently in our records: Tucan in Blauwgrond, Joah Inn in the centre, and Perfect Stay in Rainville. This page compares them on the things that matter over a month rather than a night.
The three, side by side
| Where | What you get | Published rate | Reception | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tucan Resort & Spa | Krakoenstraat 25, Blauwgrond | Family suites with two bedrooms, kitchen and terrace; king and double-queen rooms; pool, spa, gym, bar and kitchen | From USD 270 (suite) / USD 165 (room) | 08:00–22:00 daily |
| Joah Inn Appartementen | Central Paramaribo | Studios and larger apartments, some with full kitchens and separate living areas; pool, jacuzzi, spa, gym, restaurant, 24-hour security | Not published | 08:00–22:00 daily |
| Perfect Stay Apartments | Rainville | 13 rooms; air-conditioned units with kitchens, fridges and microwaves; wifi, laundry, paid airport shuttle | From about USD 73 average | Not published |
Location is the decision
Blauwgrond, where Tucan is, is green and comfortable and north of the centre — not walking distance from the historic inner city. That is fine if you have a car or are happy arranging one; it is less fine if you had pictured strolling down to the Waterkant in the evening.
Joah Inn is the one in the centre. Its own site puts the historic core, the Waterkant and the Centrale Markt all within reach on foot, which over a month is worth more than a spa.
Perfect Stay is in Rainville, between the two: the listing places it a five-minute drive from the Palmentuin and about 2.2 km from Maretraite Mall.
Since Suriname has no functioning international ride-hailing app, "a short drive" means arranging a car each time. Weight the walkable option accordingly.
Joah Inn Appartementen
Serviced apartments in central Paramaribo, from studios to spacious family apartments with full kitchens — a practical base for stays of a week or more.
Tucan Resort & Spa
Aparthotel at Krakoenstraat 25 in the Blauwgrond area with fully furnished apartments around a tropical garden, plus a pool, gym and spa — set up for longer stays as much as short ones.
Perfect Stay Apartments
Apartment complex within a five-minute drive of the Palmentuin and about 2 km from Maretraite Mall, offering furnished units bookable through the major platforms.
Kitchens are the point
All three offer self-catering, but not identically. Tucan's family suites list a full kitchen; its rooms do not. Joah Inn's larger apartments have full kitchens and separate living areas while the studios are simpler. Perfect Stay describes kitchens with refrigerators and microwaves — which is not the same thing as a stove, and is worth confirming before you commit to a month of cooking.
If you are self-catering, the Centrale Markt and the city's supermarkets are where the shopping happens: the market for produce and fish in the morning, a supermarket for everything imported.
What a month actually costs to pay for
The thing nobody warns long-stay visitors about in Suriname is the mechanics of paying, not the price.
Cash withdrawals now cost SRD 17.60 per transaction including VAT at any BNETS, Cashpnt or bank machine, and daily ceilings vary sharply by bank: SRD 20,000 at Republic Bank, SRD 10,000 at DSB and Hakrinbank, SRD 4,000 at VCB. Over a long stay that fee is a rounding error but the ceiling is not — a month's rent paid in cash is a lot of visits to a machine. Ask the property whether it takes a transfer or a card before you arrive.
Our money guide has the detail, including which ATMs actually accept foreign cards.
Republic Bank Suriname
Suriname arm of the Caribbean Republic Bank group, running the country’s largest commercial ATM network — and the network most likely to accept foreign Visa and Mastercard.
Booking direct, and claiming the discount
Tucan and Joah Inn both publish direct contact details — phone, WhatsApp and email — and both describe themselves as suited to long-term guests. For stays of a month, the direct conversation is where a monthly rate gets negotiated; the platforms are priced by the night.
Perfect Stay is a platform-only listing. We could not find a website, a published street address or a direct telephone number for it, so the platform is the only route we can point you at, and the details are worth confirming at booking.
What is missing from this page
Three things a long-stay visitor will ask that we cannot yet answer from a verified source: laundry services, gyms with day or month passes, and short-term coworking. We looked; nothing above community-tier sourcing turned up, and rather than fill the gap with directory scrapes we have left it open. If you run one of these and want to be listed, get in touch.
