Martin's House of Indian Food

Martin's House of Indian Food is at Hajarystraat 19 in Rainville, sharing a site — and a building — with the Bina's Inn apartments. Its own page makes the claim that defines it: the only authentic Indian restaurant with halal food in Suriname.

That distinction matters more here than it would elsewhere. Paramaribo has one of the deepest Hindustani food cultures anywhere outside India, but it is Surinamese-Hindustani: roti, bara, telo, eaten from the roti shops all over the city. This is subcontinental Indian cooking — paneer, dals, vegetable curries, biryani, tandoor — and the vegetarian half of the menu is unusually long for Paramaribo.
