Palumeu is the deepest-interior stay in our records. The lodge stands at the indigenous village of Palumeu on the Upper Tapanahony in southern Suriname, and METS Travel & Tours, which runs it, sells it as an all-inclusive package from €665.

Access is by light aircraft — about 75 minutes from Zorg en Hoop to the airstrip beside the village. What you go for is the village itself: the lodge sits among the Trio and Wayana communities, and the programme is built around the village, its crafts and the forest around it.

Two consequences follow from that. The first is practical: the flight schedule, not your calendar, sets the length of the stay, and there is no independent way in. The second is a matter of manners — this is somebody's home village, and the tours are sold on that basis.

Palumeu is also the usual starting point for treks to Kasikasima, which the same operator sells as a longer expedition.
