Best for

  • comfort in the interior
  • families
  • maroon culture

Anaula Nature Resort stands on an island in the Ferulassi rapids of the Upper Suriname River, and it is the comfortable end of the interior. The resort's own site lists 23 freestanding lodges sleeping two to five, with 24-hour air conditioning, hot and cold water and free wifi, and three swimming pools including one for children. That specification would be unremarkable on the coast; this far up the river it is unusual. The electricity comes from solar.

The Paramaribo office is at Wagenwegstraat 24, open Monday to Friday 08:00–16:30 and Saturday 08:00–13:00, on (597) 410700.

The resort does not publish travel times from Paramaribo and we are not going to invent them. Most Paramaribo operators sell Anaula with bus-and-boat transfer included in the package; the resort says guests may also arrange their own transport.

If air conditioning and wifi matter to you and a hammock and a generator do not, this is the lodge on the Upper Suriname to look at first.
