Best wildlife tours in Suriname: dolphins, sloths, turtles, birds and monkeys, honestly

Which animal you want decides the trip, the season and the price. Dolphins in the estuary, sloths at Peperpot, turtles at Braamspunt and Galibi, birds at Bigi Pan, forest at Brownsberg and Fredberg, with the published prices and the things nobody can promise.

Last updated

Short answer: pick the animal first, because it decides everything else. Dolphins are an afternoon and cost from EUR 27.50. Sloths and forest birds are a half day across the river. Nesting turtles are a night trip in a season the sources cannot agree on. Big bird numbers mean two or three days in the far west. Nothing in this country is guaranteed, and no honest seller says otherwise.

What wildlife can I see, and what does each cost?

Pick the animal first, because it decides the length and the price. Dolphins are an afternoon from EUR 27.50, sloths and forest birds a half day across the river, nesting turtles a night in season, and big bird numbers two or three days in the far west.

Dolphins: the cheapest and the closest

The Guiana dolphin, Sotalia guianensis, lives in the estuary between Leonsberg and Braamspunt, where Green Heritage Fund Suriname has collected data on the wild population since 2005. The foundation takes guests on its research trips, capped at ten people per trip; the commercial version leaves Leonsberg between 16:00 and 16:30 and runs three to five hours.

No operator states a sighting rate and none promises one. Switi Tours (owner of this site) says on its own Commewijne page that dolphins in the river mouth are possible and not guaranteed, which is the correct way to put it. The full list of sellers and departure times is in boat tours from Paramaribo and dolphin tours from Paramaribo.

Experience · Leonsberg (departure)

Sunset and dolphins boat trip from Leonsberg

A three- to five-hour afternoon boat trip from the Leonsberg jetty down the Suriname River to the estuary where Guiana dolphins live, returning at sunset. Sold by at least five Paramaribo operators from EUR 27.50 to EUR 60 per person as of September 2026; sightings are never guaranteed.

Sloths and old plantation forest: Peperpot

Peperpot is about 820 hectares of regrown forest on a former coffee and cocoa plantation in Commewijne, open every day 08:00 to 16:00. The forest grew back through the planting rather than replacing it, so you walk under old coffee and cacao trees now carrying bromeliads and orchids, which is a different experience from primary forest and a much easier one to reach.

The park names jaguar, capybara, sloth, anaconda and a long bird list among the wildlife on its land. That is its account of what lives there, not a forecast of your morning. Its own website did not respond to us on 6 September 2026, so we have no published entrance fee, bike hire rate or guided-walk price; the tour sellers' bike tours start at EUR 55.

Attraction · Nieuw Meerzorg, Commewijne

Peperpot Nature Park

A nature park of about 820 hectares on a former coffee and cocoa plantation in Commewijne, a short drive from Paramaribo, with walking trails through regrown forest and old plantation planting still visible.

Brownsberg: forest, not a safari

Brownsberg is roughly 12,000 hectares of plateau in Brokopondo district, with trails, waterfalls and views over the reservoir. Access Suriname Travel puts it 112 km south of Paramaribo at about an hour and a half's drive; Cardy Adventures says three hours' travel time, and the day tours that sell it start between 05:30 and 07:30 and run eleven to twelve hours. That difference is the whole argument for sleeping there instead, which jungle lodges compared takes further.

We are not printing a species list. None of the operator pages we read for Brownsberg names the primates or birds you are likely to encounter, and the park has no live official visitor page: STINASU's website did not resolve at all on 6 September 2026, so entrance fees and visitor rules are unrecorded.

Attraction · Brokopondo District

Brownsberg Nature Park

A nature park of roughly 12,000 hectares on a plateau in Brokopondo district south of Paramaribo, with rainforest trails, waterfalls and views over the Brokopondo reservoir.

Turtles, and the season nobody agrees on

Two nesting beaches are sold from Paramaribo. Braamspunt is the near one: a sand spit about 15 km away on the east bank of the river mouth, reached by on-demand boat from Leonsberg, where leatherback, green and olive ridley turtles nest. Galibi, in the Marowijne estuary at the French Guiana border, is the far one: road to Albina, then a boat crossing, and an overnight either way.

The season depends on who you ask. WWF Guianas runs monitoring and beach patrols from February to July. Mongabay reported nesting at Braamspunt from February to August. Orange Travel states February to mid-July with a peak between April and June; Jenny Tours states end of January to the end of July or early August. SUforYou's page said in September 2026 that the season had started again. We cannot reconcile those, so we print them all and suggest you ask before booking a flight around it.

Two things are worth knowing before you go. The population is in trouble: WWF Guianas counted 719 leatherback nests in Suriname in 2018, a 95 per cent decline against 2001, and a 2025 report from the Maroni estuary counted only 17 nesting leatherbacks at Awala, opposite Galibi. And guiding quality varies: WWF trains operators, guides and boat captains before each season, and its 2019 presentation records incidents of irresponsible watching by unlicensed guides. Ask whether yours is licensed, and follow the instructions you are given on the beach.

Attraction · Commewijne district, mouth of the Suriname River

Braamspunt

A sand spit on the east bank of the mouth of the Suriname River, about 15 km from Paramaribo, where leatherback, green and olive ridley turtles nest between roughly February and August. Reached by boat from the Leonsberg jetty; the beach is eroding fast.

Experience · Galibi, Marowijne district

Galibi Sea Turtle Nesting Tour

Seasonal overnight trip to the Galibi Nature Reserve at the mouth of the Marowijne River to watch sea turtles come ashore to nest. Reached by road to Albina and then about an hour by boat, with accommodation in or near the indigenous villages.

Birds: Bigi Pan

Bigi Pan is a coastal wetland and Multiple-Use Management Area in Nickerie district, managed by the Nature Conservation Division of the Forest Service. The Bigi Pan Programme at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname describes it as one of the most extensive and ecologically important wetland systems in the Guianas, hosting scarlet ibis, flamingos, herons and other waterbirds, and hundreds of thousands of migratory shorebirds each year.

It is far west and normally sold as a two or three-day trip, from EUR 180 with METS up to EUR 375 for the over-water resort with Orange Travel; Jenny Tours lists a Nickerie and Bigi Pan day tour at EUR 125, which is a long day for the distance. No official visitor page exists: access, lodges and the drive from Paramaribo come only from operator listings and one uncited secondary source.

Attraction · Nickerie district

Bigi Pan

A coastal wetland and Multiple-Use Management Area in Nickerie district, in the far west of Suriname, known for scarlet ibis, flamingos and large numbers of migratory shorebirds. Visited by boat from Nieuw Nickerie, normally as a two- or three-day trip from Paramaribo.

Deeper in: Fredberg and the interior lodges

Fredberg, a rainforest mountain near the Upper Saramacca, is sold as a two to four-day trip with a night on the summit and is named by its sellers for the Guianan cock-of-the-rock. SUforYou publishes it from EUR 285 on fixed departure dates from two participants, Orange Travel from EUR 325 with fixed departure days. The interior river lodges — Awarradam, Palumeu, Kabalebo, Danpaati and the rest — are flights, not drives, and belong to a different budget entirely.

Experience

Fredberg

Rainforest mountain near the Upper Saramacca River known for extraordinary biodiversity, including the Guianan cock-of-the-rock, with multi-day tours that let you sleep on the summit.

What no one can promise

No seller in this market publishes a sighting probability for any animal, and none should. Turtles come ashore in a season, not on a schedule. Dolphins are wild and the estuary is large. Brownsberg is forest, which means you hear more than you see. Peperpot lists what lives on its land, not what will cross your path. If a page tells you that you will see something, that page is selling, not informing.

What this page does not tell you

We have no entrance fee for Peperpot, Brownsberg or Galibi, because no official source publishes one and STINASU's site does not resolve. We have no bird lists tied to a season, no best-tide advice for the estuary and no current nest counts for Braamspunt or Galibi for 2025 or 2026. We do not know what the Frederiksdorp wildlife tours cost, since only its Boni Trail and day-visit fees are published. Viator and GetYourGuide blocked our fetcher, so their wildlife listings are absent here.

Prices were read on the sellers' own pages on 6 September 2026; destination facts carry their publisher and date in the text. Switi Tours, owned by the owner of this site, sells a Brownsberg day trip and does not sell a dolphin, turtle or Bigi Pan trip.

Common questions

When is turtle season in Suriname?

The sources disagree. WWF Guianas patrols its nesting beaches February to July; Mongabay reported February to August at Braamspunt; Orange Travel states February to mid-July with a peak in April to June, and Jenny Tours end of January to late July or early August. Ask your seller.

Where can you see sloths near Paramaribo?

Peperpot Nature Park in Commewijne, open daily 08:00 to 16:00, names sloth among the wildlife on its land along with jaguar, capybara, anaconda and a long bird list. That is the park's account of what lives there, not a promise of what you will see.

Is Suriname good for birdwatching?

Bigi Pan in Nickerie district is described by the Anton de Kom University programme as one of the most ecologically important wetlands in the Guianas, hosting scarlet ibis, flamingos, herons and hundreds of thousands of migratory shorebirds each year. It is sold as a two or three-day trip.
