Short answer: yes, there are dolphin tours from Paramaribo, and they are the cheapest and shortest excursion the city sells. Guiana dolphins live in the Suriname River estuary between Leonsberg and Braamspunt. Boats leave the Leonsberg jetty between 16:00 and 16:30, spend three to four hours on the water, usually stop at a plantation on the Commewijne bank, and come back after sunset. Six operators publish a price, from EUR 27.50 to EUR 60 per person (five read on 6 September 2026, one on 7 October 2026). Sightings are never guaranteed.
Where can I see dolphins in Suriname?
The animals are Guiana dolphins, Sotalia guianensis, a small coastal species that lives in the brackish water where the Suriname River meets the Commewijne and the Atlantic. Green Heritage Fund Suriname, the local conservation organisation, has collected data on this wild population in the estuary between Leonsberg and Braamspunt since 2005 and takes guests on research trips of at most ten people. That stretch of water is where every commercial trip goes, which is why they all leave from the same place: Leonsberg, the jetty at the northern edge of Paramaribo in Blauwgrond, a short taxi ride from the centre. Nobody publishes a best month or a best tide; the operators run all year and describe sightings as likely, not certain.
Sunset and dolphins boat trip from Leonsberg
A three- to five-hour afternoon boat trip from the Leonsberg jetty down the Suriname River to the estuary where Guiana dolphins live, returning at sunset. Sold by at least five Paramaribo operators from EUR 27.50 to EUR 60 per person as of September 2026; sightings are never guaranteed.

Reading it: Jenny Tours' version is the most fully documented, with a 16:00 meeting at the Leonsberg bus shelter, a covered tent boat, a stop at Rust en Werk plantation with a short walk, drinks, a return around 19:30, a child and student price, and a daily departure from four people. METS asks you to report at the jetty at 16:00 for a 16:15 departure, three hours, three drinks and snacks, from EUR 28. Cardy's is two to three hours at EUR 35 with transport from its office to the jetty included and a minimum of three, daily on request. Orange Travel's is a different evening: five hours from 16:30, a plantation visit with a hot meal, and caiman spotting by torchlight after dark, from EUR 60, with a minimum the page prints as six in one place and four in another. All Suriname Tours resells a EUR 28 trip with a minimum of three without naming the operator. Waterproof Tours, which sold the trip under its own name until at least 2025, no longer publishes a catalogue.
Switi Tours, owned by the owner of this site, ran its first sunset and dolphin trip in October 2026 and now publishes it at EUR 40 per person from four guests; fewer than four still go by paying EUR 160 together. It is in the table on the same terms as everyone else. Photographs from that first trip and the guest's review are in the labelled box at the top of this page, kept apart from the comparison.
The practical questions
Where do tours leave from? The Leonsberg jetty (Jenny Tours says the bus shelter, Orange says the pier, METS the jetty). Transport to Leonsberg is included only where the seller says so: Cardy includes it from its office; Orange excludes it; Jenny Tours and METS meet you there. Arrange a taxi through your accommodation; there is no ride-hailing app.
How long does it take? Three hours (METS, Cardy), three and a half (Jenny Tours, 16:00–19:30), about four (the reseller), five (Orange). All end after sunset, which in Paramaribo is between about 18:15 and 18:45 all year.
Can solo travellers join? These are the easiest departures in the country to join alone because they run most days and need only three or four people; see tours for solo travellers. Ask two operators for the same evening if the first does not have the numbers.
Are they suitable for children? Jenny Tours prints a child price for ages 3 to 12, which is the clearest published statement that children are expected. The boats are open or lightly covered and the trip is mostly sitting still on the water; the operators' pages do not state a minimum age. Orange's version returns around 21:00, later than the others.
What should I bring? The operators' own lists come down to a light rain jacket even in the dry season, sun protection for the first hour, insect repellent for the plantation stop, and something for the cool return after dark. Binoculars help; the dolphins surface briefly and rarely close.
Can sightings be guaranteed? No, by anyone. The best any page says is that they are "almost always" seen. Book it as an evening on the river that usually includes dolphins, and you will not be disappointed by the one evening it does not.
Combining dolphins with Commewijne
The dolphin boats cross the same water that the Commewijne plantation day crosses in the morning. Two ways to combine them: Jenny Tours sells its Commewijne plantation day explicitly as "plantage met dolfijnen", EUR 70 with lunch, leaving Leonsberg at 09:00 and looking for dolphins on the way; and Switi Tours' Commewijne page (owner of this site) says dolphins in the river mouth are possible on its morning crossing and not guaranteed. Otherwise the two trips stack in one day: a plantation morning back by mid-afternoon, then the 16:00 boat. The full Commewijne picture, boat versus road and what is open, is in a day in Commewijne.
Commewijne plantation boat tour
A one-day boat and road excursion from Paramaribo through Commewijne's plantation belt, usually calling at Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, Frederiksdorp and Peperpot or Rust en Werk. Sold by at least six operators from about EUR 60 to EUR 85 per person as of September 2026.
The other wildlife on the same water
The estuary's other draw is turtles. Braamspunt, the sand spit at the river mouth about 15 km from the city, is where leatherback, green and olive ridley turtles nest from roughly February to August, and Jenny Tours lists a night trip there at EUR 60. It is a different evening from the dolphin trip (later, darker, seasonal, patrolled by WWF and the Nature Conservation Division) and it belongs to a different guide: best wildlife tours in Suriname.
Braamspunt
A sand spit on the east bank of the mouth of the Suriname River, about 15 km from Paramaribo, where leatherback, green and olive ridley turtles nest between roughly February and August. Reached by boat from the Leonsberg jetty; the beach is eroding fast.
What this page does not tell you
It does not tell you how often the dolphins are actually seen, because no operator or conservation body publishes a rate. It does not tell you which operator's boat is better; no reviews are collected here. It does not print Access Suriname Travel's price for its Dolphin Chill Tour, because its boat-tours page shows one starting price for three products without saying which. And it does not resolve Orange Travel's minimum, which its own page prints as six and as four.
Prices, departure times and minimums come from the sellers' own websites, read on 6 September 2026, and are printed in the table from the offers database with a source link each. The dolphin population and monitoring facts come from Green Heritage Fund Suriname. Switi Tours is owned by the owner of this site.
