Short answer: four river trips run from Paramaribo and they answer different questions. The sunset boat to the river mouth is the cheapest and the only one that fits after a working day. The Commewijne plantation day is the one to take if you came for history. Jodensavanne by water costs roughly twice its road version and buys you the river itself. Braamspunt is a night trip in turtle season, not a cruise.
Which boat trip should I take?

The sunset dolphin boat
This is the country's most-sold excursion and its cheapest published one. Departures cluster between 16:00 and 16:30 from Leonsberg in northern Paramaribo, and the sellers describe trips of three to five hours. The boats are described on the operators' own pages as covered domed or tent boats, so sun and a shower are accounted for; two sellers list drinks and Surinamese snacks among the inclusions.
The animal is the Guiana dolphin, Sotalia guianensis. Green Heritage Fund Suriname has collected data on the wild population in the estuary between Leonsberg and Braamspunt since 2005 and takes guests on its research trips, a maximum of ten people per trip. That is the only capped-group option we found, and the only one attached to a research programme.
Nobody states a sighting rate, a best month or a tidal window. Sightings are not guaranteed by any seller, and you should distrust any page that suggests otherwise.

Sunset and dolphins boat trip from Leonsberg
A three- to five-hour afternoon boat trip from the Leonsberg jetty down the Suriname River to the estuary where Guiana dolphins live, returning at sunset. Sold by at least five Paramaribo operators from EUR 27.50 to EUR 60 per person as of September 2026; sightings are never guaranteed.
The Commewijne plantation day
The plantation boat day is the fuller trip: seven to eight hours, leaving Leonsberg between 08:30 and 09:00, calling at Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, Frederiksdorp and then either Peperpot or the Rust en Werk estate. Some sellers run the boat out and the road back, which shortens the afternoon. The whole route, including the cycling version, is set out in a day in Commewijne.
Read the inclusions before you compare prices. Lunch, entrance fees and the return leg differ per seller, and Frederiksdorp charges its own day-visit contribution: SRD 550 for international visitors and SRD 350 for children, stated in the estate's FAQ and read 6 September 2026. Whether that sits inside your tour price is not published by any seller we read.

Commewijne plantation boat tour
A one-day boat and road excursion from Paramaribo through Commewijne's plantation belt, usually calling at Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, Frederiksdorp and Peperpot or Rust en Werk. Sold by at least six operators from about EUR 60 to EUR 85 per person as of September 2026.
Openluchtmuseum Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam
An open-air museum inside the walls of Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam in Commewijne, at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers opposite Paramaribo, with former prison cells and wartime artillery on the grounds.
Plantage Resort Frederiksdorp
A restored 18th-century coffee and later cocoa plantation on the Commewijne River, designated a monument in 2004 and now operating as a resort with a small district story museum and a heritage walking trail.
Jodensavanne by river, or by road
Jodensavanne, a World Heritage site since 2023, sits about 50 km south of Paramaribo by Cardy Adventures' account, and can be reached either way. Orange Travel's boat trip is a nine-hour day from EUR 125, leaving the marine steps on the waterfront between 08:00 and 09:00 and calling at Domburg on Sundays only, then Laarwijk, the site itself and Overbridge River Resort; its page states a minimum of four while its general terms say three. Road tours from other sellers run EUR 65 to EUR 95 and often pair the site with Overbridge or Colakreek for lunch.
The river version therefore costs roughly twice the road version, and what it buys is the Suriname River, the riverside villages and a longer day. The site's own foundation publishes neither opening hours nor an entrance fee, which is why almost everyone visits on a tour. Both routes are compared in more detail in Jodensavanne and Commewijne or Jodensavanne.
Jodensavanne Archaeological Site
UNESCO-listed remains of a 17th-century Jewish settlement on the Suriname River, including the ruins of what is believed to be the earliest architecturally significant synagogue in the Americas and the older Cassipora Creek cemetery.
Overbridge River Resort
River resort on the Suriname River south of Paramaribo with a river beach and no flight involved, popular for weekend stays and as the lunch stop on Jodensavanne day tours.
Braamspunt at night
Braamspunt is a sand spit on the east bank of the river mouth, about 15 km from Paramaribo, reached by on-demand boat from Leonsberg. Leatherback, green and olive ridley turtles nest there; Mongabay reported the season as February to August in October 2024, while WWF Guianas runs its monitoring and beach patrols from February to July. SUforYou's trips page stated on 6 September 2026 that the season had started again, which fits neither window, so treat the dates as contested and ask the seller before you book.
The beach is disappearing. Mongabay reported stretches that were 500 m wide or more five years earlier down to 10 to 12 metres in 2024, with WWF and the Nature Conservation Division relocating threatened nests. One published price exists: Jenny Tours lists a Braamspunt turtle night tour at EUR 60 per person.
Braamspunt
A sand spit on the east bank of the mouth of the Suriname River, about 15 km from Paramaribo, where leatherback, green and olive ridley turtles nest between roughly February and August. Reached by boat from the Leonsberg jetty; the beach is eroding fast.
Leonsberg, the departure point
Almost every boat above leaves from the same jetty in Blauwgrond, north Paramaribo. It was commissioned in 1913, and scheduled daily service ended in 1952; since then the crossings to Nieuw Amsterdam and Braamspunt have been run on demand by private operators, which means boats leave when they are full rather than to a timetable. Surinamese media reported to the National Assembly that these operators are in difficulty, with the Meerzorg–Paramaribo fleet down from roughly forty boats to sixteen. No official source we found publishes a fare or a departure time for the crossing, so do not build a tight day around one.
What to bring, and what to ask
Ask three questions before paying: whether lunch and entrance fees are included, whether the return leg is by boat or road, and what the minimum group is, because a trip advertised daily may only run from three, four or six people. For a turtle night, ask whether your guide is licensed: WWF Guianas trains operators, guides and boat captains before each season and its own 2019 presentation records incidents of irresponsible watching by unlicensed guides. Bring sun cover, water and something waterproof for a camera; the boats are covered, but the river is not.
What this page does not tell you
We have no fare and no timetable for the public Leonsberg crossing, because none is published. We have no sighting probabilities for dolphins or turtles, because no source states any. We have no entrance fee for Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam or Peperpot. Access Suriname Travel prints a single starting price of EUR 79 across three different boat products, and we cannot say which one it belongs to. Waterproof Tours, long associated with the sunset dolphin trip, no longer publishes a tour catalogue at all. Viator and GetYourGuide blocked our fetcher, so no reseller price from either is recorded here.
Prices and departure times were read on the sellers' own pages on 6 September 2026 unless stated otherwise; destination facts carry their publisher and date in the text. Switi Tours, owned by the owner of this site, does not sell a boat trip and is not listed above.
Common questions
- What is the cheapest boat trip from Paramaribo?
The sunset and dolphin trip from Leonsberg. Published per-person prices on 6 September 2026 started at EUR 27.50 with Jenny Tours and EUR 28 with METS and the reseller All Suriname Tours, for a trip of three to five hours leaving between 16:00 and 16:30.
- Are dolphin sightings guaranteed on the Suriname River?
No. The Guiana dolphins in the estuary are a wild population, monitored by Green Heritage Fund Suriname since 2005. No seller we read promises a sighting, and Switi Tours states plainly that dolphins on its Commewijne crossing are possible but not guaranteed.
- Is there a public ferry from Leonsberg to Commewijne?
Not on a timetable. Scheduled service from Leonsberg ended in 1952; crossings since then are run on demand by private operators, and no fare or departure time is published by any official source we could find.
