Fredberg is a forested mountain near the Upper Saramacca and Pikin Saamaka rivers, and over the past few years it has become the wildlife trip Surinamese operators talk about. The draw is the Guianan cock-of-the-rock, though the operator selling the trip is careful to say that sightings depend on the season and are never guaranteed — which is the right way to sell a bird.
Trips run two, three or four days, at €285, €325 and €420 per adult. Nights are spent in hammocks at a simple camp with kitchen facilities on the summit; the four-day version adds a night in a cave. What returning visitors describe is less the summit view than the sky above it after dark.
This is an experience rather than a place you can turn up at. There is no independent access and no accommodation to book directly, and several Paramaribo operators now run it, so compare what is included before you compare prices.
