Short answer: Jodensavanne is the ruin of a Jewish plantation settlement on the east bank of the Suriname River, founded in the seventeenth century, with the remains of the Beracha Ve Shalom synagogue and its cemeteries, and the older Cassipora Creek cemetery nearby. UNESCO inscribed it in 2023 as Suriname's third World Heritage property, and second cultural one, after the Central Suriname Nature Reserve (2000, natural) and the historic inner city of Paramaribo (2002, cultural). It is about 50 km south of Paramaribo and is visited on a day tour, by road with a ferry crossing or by speedboat upriver, usually paired with a swim at Overbridge. Six sellers published a price on 6 September 2026, from EUR 65 to EUR 150.
What is at Jodensavanne?
A cleared area of forest on the river bank holding the brick foundations and walls of the synagogue, consecrated in 1685 according to the historical accounts the operators repeat, three cemeteries (Jewish and Creole), and, according to Access Suriname Travel's tour page, four natural springs including one described as medicinal. The Cassipora Creek cemetery, part of the inscribed site, is older than the settlement itself. The Jodensavanne Foundation, based at Fort Zeelandia in Paramaribo, maintains the site and publishes research on the tombstones and a cemetery database. What it does not publish, on any page of its website we could read, is an opening time, an entrance fee, or a visiting rule; its homepage offers a link to Google driving directions from Independence Square and nothing more.
Jodensavanne Archaeological Site
UNESCO-listed remains of a 17th-century Jewish settlement on the Suriname River, including the ruins of what is believed to be the earliest architecturally significant synagogue in the Americas and the older Cassipora Creek cemetery.
Why it is UNESCO-listed
Suriname had two World Heritage properties — the Central Suriname Nature Reserve (inscribed 2000, natural) and the historic inner city of Paramaribo (inscribed 2002, cultural) — until September 2023, when UNESCO added the Jodensavanne Archaeological Site: Jodensavanne Settlement and Cassipora Creek Cemetery, its third property and second cultural one. Most travel writing about Suriname has not caught up, and the operators' own pages still call it "the Jewish savannah" rather than a World Heritage site. The citation presents the settlement as evidence of early Jewish settlement in the Americas and of a plantation colony built on enslaved labour; the synagogue is described in the literature as among the earliest of architectural significance in the western hemisphere. We could not read the UNESCO listing page itself on 6 September 2026 (it refused our reader), so the inscription details on this page come from the entry record this site already holds and from the operators; the year, 2023, is consistent across every source.
How travellers reach it: road or boat
There are two ways, and they are different days.
By road. A minibus or car south from Paramaribo through the Para district, then a ferry crossing to the site. Jenny Tours sells this version at EUR 82.50 per person, daily from three people, with a guided tour, lunch, entry to the ruins and cemetery, and a swim in the river; its page names stops at Powakka and the Ayo plantation on the way. Cardy Adventures sells a road day at EUR 65 on its product page (EUR 75 on its overview page; we record both), minimum three, with transport, snacks, drinks, entry tickets and a guide. Access Suriname Travel's road version is from EUR 85 and is combined with Overbridge. All Suriname Tours resells a bus tour at EUR 85 without naming the operator. METS combines Jodensavanne with Colakreek, from EUR 95.
By boat. A speedboat from the Paramaribo waterfront up the Suriname River, which is the historical approach and the scenic one. Orange Travel's boat trip leaves the marine stairs on the waterfront between 08:00 and 09:00, takes about nine hours, stops at Laarwijk and (on Sundays) the Domburg plantation, visits Jodensavanne, and lunches and swims at Overbridge River Resort before returning around 17:00; from EUR 125 per adult, minimum four on the page, "three to guarantee departure" in its general terms. Jenny Tours lists a boat version at EUR 150.

How much time to allow
A full day, whichever way you go. The boat trips are nine hours door to door; the road versions are not timed on the operators' pages but every one of them includes lunch and a swim, which places them in the same bracket. Jodensavanne is not a half day and cannot be combined with a morning in Commewijne; if you have one free day and want history and water in it, this is that day. The comparison with Commewijne, which is the other candidate for that day, is in Commewijne or Jodensavanne?.
Overbridge, and why the two share a day
Overbridge River Resort sits on the Suriname River in the Para district, forty-five minutes from Paramaribo and fifteen from the airport by its own account, with a river beach and a pool. Most Jodensavanne tours lunch and swim there on the way back, which is why Orange Travel's and Access Suriname Travel's Jodensavanne products include it and why it has its own day trip from EUR 75 (Orange, ten hours, every day from two people). If swimming matters more than ruins, book Overbridge alone; if the ruins matter, you get the swim anyway.
Overbridge River Resort
River resort on the Suriname River south of Paramaribo with a river beach and no flight involved, popular for weekend stays and as the lunch stop on Jodensavanne day tours.
METS pairs Jodensavanne with Colakreek instead, the blackwater creek near the airport; same idea, different water.
Colakreek Recreatiepark
Recreation park around a tannin-dark blackwater creek near Zanderij in the Para district: a longtime favourite swimming and picnic spot, with holiday cabins at the forest edge and a savannah education centre.
Suitability and walking
The site is flat forest and cleared ground; the walking is between the synagogue and the cemeteries, on paths, in full sun where the trees have been cleared. None of the operators' pages states a distance walked, a minimum age or an accessibility note, so this page does not either. The boat version involves several hours in a speedboat; the road version a ferry crossing. Jenny Tours' road day prints a child price on other products but not on this one. Ask the operator directly about children, mobility and the state of the access road in the long rainy season (mid-April to mid-August), which is the question we would ask.
Which operator, and how to book
The sellers are compared on their own terms in Suriname tour operators compared. For one person, the road versions from Jenny Tours and Cardy need three people and the boat version four, so ask early and ask more than one; the mechanics are in tours for solo travellers.
Switi Tours, owned by the owner of this site, does not list Jodensavanne in its published programme. Its stated service area includes the Para district and it arranges custom day programmes on request, so the button on Jodensavanne's page asks it to check availability and says nothing stronger; the operators above are the ones with a published product.

What this page does not tell you
It does not print opening hours, an entrance fee or visiting rules for Jodensavanne, because the foundation that runs the site publishes none and we will not copy figures of unknown provenance from blogs. It does not give a drive time or the condition of the road, because no operator page states them. It does not quote the UNESCO criteria, because the listing page refused our reader on the day we checked; the year of inscription is the one fact every source agrees on. And it cannot resolve the two prices on Cardy Adventures' site or the two minimums in Orange Travel's, so it prints both.
