Commewijne or Jodensavanne? Which day trip from Paramaribo to take when you only have one

Both are a full day out of the city, both are about plantations and the people who worked them, and they sit in opposite directions. Commewijne is closer, cheaper, easier to join and pairs with dolphins; Jodensavanne is the World Heritage site and the longer river day. Compared on what the operators publish, read 6 September 2026.

Short answer: with one free day, take Commewijne if you want the easiest, cheapest, most joinable day out of Paramaribo: a fort, a restored plantation with its prison cells still standing, a nature park with sloths, all within an hour of the city, from EUR 60, with departures that run from two or three people and a fair chance of dolphins on the crossing. Take Jodensavanne if the World Heritage site is the point: the synagogue ruin and cemeteries of a seventeenth-century Jewish planter colony, 50 km upriver, a nine-hour day by boat or a shorter one by road, from EUR 65, usually with a swim at Overbridge. They cannot be combined in a day.

Commewijne or Jodensavanne: which one should I pick?

Commewijne is the easier and cheaper day, from EUR 60, with departures that run from two or three people. Jodensavanne is the World Heritage day, from EUR 65 by road or about nine hours by boat. They lie in different directions and neither fits inside the other.

What you actually see

Commewijne is a working rural district, not a heritage park. The estate names are on the road signs and the dams still hold the water back. Three sites interpret the history properly: the open-air museum inside Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam at the confluence of the two rivers; Frederiksdorp, a coffee-then-cocoa plantation from 1747 where the director's house looks straight at the cells, with a story museum in the restored house and the Boni Trail, an educational slavery-history walk opened in 2022; and Peperpot, where the forest has grown back through the coffee and cacao rows and sloths are seen most mornings. The day is flat, mostly on the water and in shade, and it is the one Suriname excursion sold by almost every operator, which keeps the price down and the departures frequent. The full route and what is open is in a day in Commewijne.

Experience · Commewijne district

Commewijne plantation boat tour

A one-day boat and road excursion from Paramaribo through Commewijne's plantation belt, usually calling at Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, Frederiksdorp and Peperpot or Rust en Werk. Sold by at least six operators from about EUR 60 to EUR 85 per person as of September 2026.

Attraction · North Commewijne

Plantage Resort Frederiksdorp

A restored 18th-century coffee and later cocoa plantation on the Commewijne River, designated a monument in 2004 and now operating as a resort with a small district story museum and a heritage walking trail.

Attraction · Nieuw Meerzorg, Commewijne

Peperpot Nature Park

A nature park of about 820 hectares on a former coffee and cocoa plantation in Commewijne, a short drive from Paramaribo, with walking trails through regrown forest and old plantation planting still visible.

Jodensavanne is a single site in forest on the river bank: the brick walls and floor of the Beracha Ve Shalom synagogue, three cemeteries whose tombstones the Jodensavanne Foundation has catalogued, and springs. It rewards someone who reads the stones. It is quieter, further, and more of an expedition; the boat version is the historical approach and the more expensive one. Everything about it, including why UNESCO listed it and why the foundation publishes no hours, is in Jodensavanne.

Attraction

Jodensavanne Archaeological Site

UNESCO-listed remains of a 17th-century Jewish settlement on the Suriname River, including the ruins of what is believed to be the earliest architecturally significant synagogue in the Americas and the older Cassipora Creek cemetery.

Accommodation

Overbridge River Resort

River resort on the Suriname River south of Paramaribo with a river beach and no flight involved, popular for weekend stays and as the lunch stop on Jodensavanne day tours.

Cost, honestly

The two cheapest published prices are within five euros of each other (EUR 60 for a Commewijne boat day at SUforYou, EUR 65 for Jodensavanne by road at Cardy), so price alone does not decide it. What separates them is the boat. Commewijne by boat is the standard product and costs EUR 60 to EUR 79; Jodensavanne by boat is the premium product at EUR 125 to EUR 150, because it is a speedboat for most of a day. Jodensavanne by road, at EUR 65 to EUR 95, is the version to compare with Commewijne. Every seller's price is in the tables on the two hub pages and in the excursion price index.

Ease of joining

Commewijne wins for one or two people. Orange Travel's river cruise runs daily from two, Jenny Tours' from three, SUforYou's on fixed dates from four with the seats shown, and Switi Tours' (owner of this site) from two. Jodensavanne needs three by road and four by boat, and the boat has a published day only "on request" at Orange. If you are alone, read tours for solo travellers before choosing; the practical answer is often that Commewijne runs on the day you want and Jodensavanne runs on the day the operator fills the boat.

What this page does not tell you

It does not tell you which is the better experience, because that depends on what you read and what you like, and this site records no reviews. It does not give Jodensavanne's hours, fee or road condition, or the Leonsberg crossing's times and fares, because none is published anywhere we could cite. It does not resolve the operators' own inconsistencies (Cardy's two Jodensavanne prices, Orange's two minimums), and prints both. And the dolphins are wild: "possible on the crossing" is the strongest thing anyone can honestly say.

Switi Tours, owned by the owner of this site, sells the Commewijne day (EUR 75, seven hours, groups of two to eight, boat out and road back) and does not sell Jodensavanne; where its button appears on these pages it is labelled as the owner's business, and the comparison above is written without regard to it.

Experience · Leonsberg (departure)

Sunset and dolphins boat trip from Leonsberg

A three- to five-hour afternoon boat trip from the Leonsberg jetty down the Suriname River to the estuary where Guiana dolphins live, returning at sunset. Sold by at least five Paramaribo operators from EUR 27.50 to EUR 60 per person as of September 2026; sightings are never guaranteed.

Prices, durations and minimums come from the operators' own product pages, read on 6 September 2026 and recorded with quotes in this site's research files; Frederiksdorp's fees from its own FAQ; Peperpot's hours from its own site (read 21 August 2026); the UNESCO inscription year from the entry record for the archaeological site.
