Short answer: you can, with one caveat that decides everything: almost every excursion from Paramaribo is sold per departure with a minimum number of people, published per tour, from two (several city, Commewijne and Fredberg products) to three or four (dolphins, Jodensavanne, most boat days) and six (Orange Travel's dolphin evening). A single traveller joins a departure that has reached that number. Whether a departure will run for one person alone is something no operator we read publishes, so it is the first question to ask.
Can I join an excursion in Suriname alone?
Almost every excursion is sold per departure with a published minimum, from two people to six. A single traveller joins a departure that has already reached that number, and whether one will run for one person alone is the question no operator publishes.
Suriname has no marketplace where you buy a seat on a scheduled bus tour and turn up. Tours are sold by the operator, usually by WhatsApp or email, and the operator decides whether a day runs by counting the people who have asked for it. The published minimum is that count. Two things follow. First, a minimum of three does not mean you need to bring two friends; it means the operator needs three bookings on that day, and yours may be the third. Second, the operator's answer to "does it run on Tuesday?" depends on who else has asked, which is why the operators that publish dates with seats left are so much more useful to one person than the ones that say "daily on request".
Only one operator in our research does that in full. SUforYou lists fixed departure dates per tour with the number of places still open, and the minimum for the date to go ahead: two for Fredberg at the regular rate, four for the Commewijne plantation boat tour. The site is in Dutch, but a date and a seat count need no translation.
SUforYou
Paramaribo tour operator with a Dutch-language site selling day excursions and multi-day interior trips (Fredberg, Kabalebo, Palumeu, Commewijne boat tour) on fixed departure dates with published minimum group sizes. Self-reported thirteen-plus years in operation.
Jenny Tours comes next: each product page states a daily departure from a minimum, which is two for the city tour and Galibi, three for the Commewijne plantation day and Jodensavanne by road, four for the dolphin trip. Orange Travel prints a minimum on every product and fixed days for Fredberg. METS's lodge programmes fly on Mondays and Fridays with stated maximums, which is a shared departure by definition. Cardy states three for dolphins and Jodensavanne. Switi Tours (owner of this site) runs every tour from two persons with a cap of eight, and does not publish whether separate bookings are combined; ask.

Excursions by what one person needs
| Excursion | Published minimum (operator) | Shared departure stated? | Best case for a solo traveller |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunset and dolphins boat trip | 3 (Cardy, All Suriname Tours), 4 (Jenny Tours), 6 or 4 (Orange, inconsistent on the page); METS not stated | Jenny Tours: daily from 4; Cardy: daily on request | The cheapest and most frequent departure in Suriname; several boats leave Leonsberg around 16:00 most days, so ask two operators for the same evening |
| Guided city walk or food tour | 2 (Jenny Tours city tour, Switi Tours walk), 3 (Switi Tours food tour) | Jenny Tours: daily from 2 | On foot, in town, no transport to fill: the easiest yes |
| Commewijne plantation boat day | 2 (Orange river cruise), 3 (Jenny Tours), 4 (SUforYou, on fixed dates), 6 or 3 (Orange bus tour, inconsistent) | Orange: daily from 2; Jenny: daily from 3; SUforYou: dated | The one day trip with a published minimum of two and a private option (Orange) |
| Jodensavanne | 3 (Jenny Tours by road, Cardy), 4 (Orange by boat, "3 to guarantee" in its general terms) | Jenny Tours: daily from 3 | Ask for the road version first; the boat needs four |
| Brownsberg day | 3 (Orange), 2 (Switi Tours, owner of this site); Jenny, Cardy, METS not stated | Orange: every day from 3 | A long day in a vehicle; groups fill on weekends |
| Overbridge day | 2 (Orange) | Orange: every day with a minimum of 2 | Departure and return times can be chosen |
| Fredberg (2–4 days) | 2 (SUforYou fixed dates; Orange on its fixed days, 4 on other days with a surcharge) | Both publish fixed days | Book the fixed date; the surcharge for an off-day departure at Orange is EUR 25 per person per night |
| Galibi (2–3 days) | 2 (Jenny Tours), 4 (Orange; EUR 275 instead of EUR 225 for 2–3 people) | Jenny: daily departure possible, book 5 days ahead | Season roughly February to July; outside it there is nothing to see |
| Interior lodges (Awarradam, Palumeu, Kabalebo) | Not stated as a minimum; fixed flight days and maximums (METS: Mon and Fri, max 24 and 20) | Yes, by fixed day | Shared by design; the constraint is the flight day, not your group size |
| Frederiksdorp Boni Trail | 1 (the estate's own page) | Not applicable | The only product we found that states one person as the minimum |

This table lists the offers whose seller either runs a shared departure or states a minimum of two travellers or fewer. An offer that publishes neither is not listed here, because silence is not a policy. Prices are printed exactly as the seller published them on the date shown, in the seller's currency, and are not converted. A seller with no published price shows "Not published".
Can you ask for a private departure?
Orange Travel's Commewijne river cruise page says a private tour is also available. Switi Tours' programme is small-group by design (two to eight) and lists custom day programmes on request. Nobody else we read publishes a private option or a private price; that does not mean it is unavailable, only that you have to ask and that the price will be quoted, not published. A useful rule: if an operator's minimum is three and you are one, ask what it would cost to run for one, and ask whether they would rather add you to the next departure that fills.
How pricing works for one person
Prices in Suriname are published per person, and most are the same whether the boat carries the minimum or a full load. The exceptions we found are explicit surcharges for small groups: Orange Travel's Galibi at EUR 275 for two or three people against EUR 225 from four, and its Fredberg off-day departures needing four people or a EUR 25 per person per night supplement. Jenny Tours prints child and student prices on some products (EUR 22.50 on the dolphin trip). Deposits are common (Jenny Tours 30 percent, Switi Tours 20 percent); the balance is usually cash on the day in Surinamese dollars, euros or US dollars. Card payment before you fly exists at Jenny Tours' webshop and the reseller All Suriname Tours; everyone else confirms by message and takes a deposit by transfer or on arrival. The excursion price index has every published price by trip.
How far ahead to ask
Published lead times are rare. Jenny Tours asks for Galibi bookings at least five days ahead. Switi Tours' questions page says a few days for city tours, a week for Brownsberg or Commewijne, and four to six weeks in July, August, the week around 25 November and the Christmas holidays. For everything else, the honest guidance is structural rather than published: the more people a departure needs, the earlier you should ask, because you are waiting for others as much as they are waiting for you. Two or three days before is workable for the dolphin boat; a week or more for anything needing four; the fixed-date products (SUforYou, Orange's Fredberg, METS's lodges) simply on the date.
Questions to put to an operator, in writing
- Does this departure run on my date, and how many people are already booked on it?
- What is the minimum for it to run, and will you tell me by when if it does not?
- Is the price per person the same at the minimum as at a full boat?
- What happens to my deposit if the departure is cancelled for lack of numbers?
- Where exactly do I meet, and is transport from my hotel included or do I get myself to Leonsberg?
- Which language will the guide speak?
- For Galibi or Braamspunt: are turtles being seen this week, and what are the rules on the beach?
Keep the answers. A written confirmation with the date, the meeting point, the price and the minimum is the contract; in a market with no platform in between, it is the only one.
Which excursions suit one traveller best
Not for any reason of safety, which this page has no evidence to discuss either way, but for the plain mechanics above: the dolphin boat (frequent, cheap, small minimum), a guided city walk or food tour (no transport to fill, on foot, eating with people), the Commewijne boat day from the operators that run it from two or three, and the fixed-date interior products where the group is assembled for you. The ones to plan around are Jodensavanne by boat and the Orange dolphin evening, which need four to six, and anything remote in low season.
Sunset and dolphins boat trip from Leonsberg
A three- to five-hour afternoon boat trip from the Leonsberg jetty down the Suriname River to the estuary where Guiana dolphins live, returning at sunset. Sold by at least five Paramaribo operators from EUR 27.50 to EUR 60 per person as of September 2026; sightings are never guaranteed.
Paramaribo food tour
A guided walking tour through Paramaribo's kitchens and markets with several tastings, typically three to four hours, sold by more than one operator. Published prices range from EUR 39 to EUR 55 per person as of September 2026.
Commewijne plantation boat tour
A one-day boat and road excursion from Paramaribo through Commewijne's plantation belt, usually calling at Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, Frederiksdorp and Peperpot or Rust en Werk. Sold by at least six operators from about EUR 60 to EUR 85 per person as of September 2026.
Where Switi Tours (owner of this site) sells the trip you want, its button on that page is the site's preferred booking path and it will check a date for one person like anyone else; where it does not sell the trip, the operators above are the ones to ask.
What this page does not tell you
It does not tell you what any operator will do when one person books and nobody else does, because none of them publishes that. It does not say anything about the social side of group tours, or about safety for people travelling alone, because this site records sourced facts and holds none on either. It does not cover the platform listings on Viator and GetYourGuide, which blocked our reader. And two operator pages contradict themselves on minimums (Orange's dolphin page: six and four; its Commewijne bus tour: six and three); we print both numbers rather than pick one.
Minimums, departure days and lead times on this page come from the operators' own websites, read on 6 September 2026; each is recorded with a quote in this site's research files and printed per product in the tables. Switi Tours is owned by the owner of this site and is described on the same terms as the others.
Common questions
- Can a solo traveller join a tour in Suriname?
Yes, but most day trips are sold per departure with a minimum of two to four people, and a few need six. Operators generally add single travellers to a group that has already reached the minimum; what they do not publish is whether a single booking on its own will run.
- Which Suriname tours run for two people?
On the operators' own pages in September 2026: Orange Travel's Commewijne river cruise, Overbridge day and Fredberg; Jenny Tours' city tour and Galibi; SUforYou's Fredberg on fixed dates; and all Switi Tours products, which run from two. Frederiksdorp's Boni Trail runs from one.
- How far ahead should a solo traveller book a Suriname tour?
Jenny Tours asks for Galibi bookings at least five days ahead. Switi Tours says a few days for city tours, a week for Brownsberg or Commewijne, and four to six weeks in July, August, late November and the Christmas holidays. Others do not publish a lead time.
