Short answer: Commewijne is the district directly across the water from Paramaribo, where the coffee, cocoa and sugar estates stood, and it is the easiest good day out of the city. The three anchors are Peperpot Nature Park (open daily 08:00–16:00), the open-air museum in Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, and Frederiksdorp, a restored plantation up the Commewijne River; Marienburg's sugar factory site is the fourth. Most people go by boat from the Leonsberg jetty in the morning, and nine sellers published a day at EUR 60 to EUR 85 on 6 September 2026. Dolphins are possible on the crossing and never guaranteed.
Why go to Commewijne?
Suriname's plantation economy was built on the rivers, and Commewijne is where most of it stood. What survives is not a heritage park but an ordinary rural district with the estate names still on the road signs, dams still holding back the water, and a handful of sites where the history is interpreted properly. It is also, bluntly, the easiest good day out from Paramaribo: Brownsberg is a long drive, the interior needs a flight, Jodensavanne is a nine-hour river day. Commewijne needs a boat ride.
Should I go by boat or by road?
The district is reached three ways, and which one you take decides the day.
By boat, the standard day. A boat leaves Leonsberg, the jetty at the northern edge of Paramaribo, between 08:00 and 09:00, crosses the Suriname River past the city front, and enters the Commewijne. This is how the estates were always reached, it passes the estuary where the dolphins live, and it is what most operators sell: the boat calls at Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam at the confluence, goes upriver to Frederiksdorp, and comes back by boat or, with some sellers, by road via Peperpot. Seven to eight hours.
By road. The Wijdenbosch bridge puts the whole district within a drive. Jenny Tours sells a Commewijne day by car at EUR 85 visiting four plantations; Orange Travel's bus tour, from EUR 85, leaves Hotel Torarica at 08:00 for Peperpot and Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam with a boat leg. Road versions suit people who do not want an open boat, and they reach Peperpot early, which is when the sloths are easiest to see.
By bicycle. Commewijne is flat polder with light traffic, which is why Cardy Adventures' plantation bike tour exists (EUR 65 for the one-day Peperpot ride, EUR 185 for the two-day version, groups of four to fourteen) and why Jenny Tours lists bike days to Peperpot and Frederiksdorp at EUR 85. You still cross by boat.

Switi Tours, owned by the owner of this site, is one of those sellers (EUR 75, seven hours, boat out and road back, groups of two to eight). Its row sits in the table on the same terms as the others; the button at the top of this page is the site's preferred booking path and is labelled as the owner's business.
Commewijne plantation boat tour
A one-day boat and road excursion from Paramaribo through Commewijne's plantation belt, usually calling at Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, Frederiksdorp and Peperpot or Rust en Werk. Sold by at least six operators from about EUR 60 to EUR 85 per person as of September 2026.
Peperpot Nature Park
Peperpot is a nature park laid over a former coffee and cocoa plantation at Hadji Iding Soemitaweg 32, Nieuw Meerzorg, open every day 08:00–16:00, on +597 354 547. The plantation was never cleared away: the forest grew back through the planting rather than replacing it, so the old coffee and cacao trees are still standing under the canopy, carrying bromeliads and orchids. The park names jaguar, capybara, sloth, anaconda and a long bird list among the wildlife on its land; that is its account of what lives there, not a promise of what you will see. Sloths are the usual sighting, and every operator that goes there says the early morning is best. We could not read an entrance fee, bicycle hire or guided-walk price on the park's own site, which refused our reader on 6 September 2026; METS lists a Peperpot bike tour from EUR 55.
Peperpot Nature Park
A nature park of about 820 hectares on a former coffee and cocoa plantation in Commewijne, a short drive from Paramaribo, with walking trails through regrown forest and old plantation planting still visible.
Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam
The fort sits at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers, directly opposite Paramaribo, and has held an open-air museum inside its walls since 1968: former prison cells, Second World War artillery and the earthworks themselves. It works as one stop on a Commewijne day rather than as a destination. Opening hours circulate (weekdays 09:00–17:00, weekends 10:00–18:00) but only through community sources, and the museum's own website did not resolve when we checked, so we record them as unverified. Every organised day includes it.
Openluchtmuseum Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam
An open-air museum inside the walls of Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam in Commewijne, at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers opposite Paramaribo, with former prison cells and wartime artillery on the grounds.
Frederiksdorp
Further up the Commewijne, Frederiksdorp is a restored plantation established in 1747 as a coffee estate and switched to cocoa in 1873; in 2004 it was designated the first monument and heritage site outside Paramaribo. The director's house, the police post and the prison cells stand in sight of each other, which is the point of the place. The restored house holds the North Commewijne Story Museum, and the Boni Trail, an educational slavery-history walk opened in 2022, runs from the estate (SRD 200 per person, minimum one, on its own page). Frederiksdorp publishes what the other sites do not: a day-visit contribution of SRD 550 per international visitor and SRD 350 per child, covering the estate, a guided tour, the museum and the pool; boatmen at the Marienburg pier at SRD 700 per boat return (its FAQ also prints SRD 350 in one place); ferries daily 08:00–18:00; check-in 13:30 for overnight guests. It is on almost every operator's route and sells its own day visits and eighteen tours directly.
Plantage Resort Frederiksdorp
A restored 18th-century coffee and later cocoa plantation on the Commewijne River, designated a monument in 2004 and now operating as a resort with a small district story museum and a heritage walking trail.
Marienburg
Marienburg was the largest sugar factory in Suriname, founded as a plantation in 1745 and industrialised after 1882; the factory closed in 1986 and its grounds and halls are now visited, deteriorated, with monuments to the uprising of 29 July 1902, in which soldiers killed 24 workers, and to 120 years of Javanese immigration, and a Culinary, Craft and Art Center opened in December 2023. Its entry on this site carries the sources. METS lists a Sugar Trail Tour from EUR 78 whose content we have not verified; the standard boat day does not stop here.
Marienburg sugar factory site
The ruins of what was once Suriname's largest sugar factory, at Marienburg in Commewijne, founded as a sugar plantation in 1745 and now a memorial site connected to the history of indentured labour.
Combining Commewijne with dolphins
The morning crossing passes the Suriname River estuary between Leonsberg and Braamspunt where Guiana dolphins live, so every boat day has a chance of them; Jenny Tours sells its day as "plantage met dolfijnen" and Switi Tours' page says dolphins are possible and not guaranteed. The dedicated dolphin boats leave the same jetty at 16:00 to 16:30, which means a plantation day back by mid-afternoon and a dolphin evening fit in one day. Prices, departures and who runs them are in dolphin tours from Paramaribo.
Sunset and dolphins boat trip from Leonsberg
A three- to five-hour afternoon boat trip from the Leonsberg jetty down the Suriname River to the estuary where Guiana dolphins live, returning at sunset. Sold by at least five Paramaribo operators from EUR 27.50 to EUR 60 per person as of September 2026; sightings are never guaranteed.
Getting across on your own
This is the part to plan, because it is the part that goes wrong. Private boats cross from the Leonsberg jetty to Nieuw Amsterdam and Braamspunt on demand: scheduled service ended in 1952 and boats since then leave when full, not to a timetable, and Surinamese media have reported the operators in financial difficulty. The government confirms the state operator NVB runs boat services in Commewijne but publishes neither this route nor a fare. We therefore print no departure times and no fares for the crossing, and you should distrust any you find in an older blog post. Frederiksdorp's own instructions (boatmen at the Marienburg pier, a per-boat price) are the one published exception. Going with an operator makes the crossing somebody else's problem, which is most of what you pay for.
Which operator
Nine sellers is more choice than any other Suriname excursion has, and the differences are inclusions and minimums rather than route. Orange Travel's river cruise runs daily from two people and offers a private version; Jenny Tours' from three with lunch; SUforYou's on fixed dates from four; Cardy's is the cycling version. All of them are compared, on their own published terms, in tour operators compared, and the mechanics of joining one alone are in tours for solo travellers. Where Commewijne sits against Jodensavanne, the other candidate for one free day, is in Commewijne or Jodensavanne?.
Commewijne Plantation Bike Tour (Cardy Adventures)
Guided cycling day trip across the Suriname River into Commewijne, riding between former coffee, cocoa and sugar plantations and along the polder dams. Sold as a one-day version and a two-day version with an overnight in the plantation area.
Jenny Tours Suriname
Paramaribo tour operator on the Waterkant selling a large catalogue of day trips, multi-day tours and round trips, including Commewijne plantation and Frederiksdorp bicycle tours, dolphin spotting, Brownsberg and sea turtle trips. States it operates most tours with its own guides.
What this page does not tell you
It does not give times or fares for the Leonsberg crossing, an entrance fee or hire prices for Peperpot, or verified hours or admission for Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, because none of the bodies responsible publishes them where we can read it. It does not say which operator's day is best; no reviews are collected here. It does not describe the Sugar Trail. And it does not promise dolphins.

Common questions
- What can I see in Commewijne?
The open-air museum inside Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, Frederiksdorp plantation with its director's house, cells, story museum and Boni Trail, Peperpot Nature Park with sloths and monkeys, Rust en Werk plantation, and the Marienburg sugar factory site with its monuments to the 1902 uprising and Javanese immigration.
- Should I visit Commewijne by boat or by road?
Most operators go by boat from the Leonsberg jetty in the morning, which is how the district was always reached and passes the dolphin estuary; some return by road. Road-only versions exist (Jenny Tours by car EUR 85, Orange bus tour from EUR 85) and cyclists cross by boat then ride the flat polder roads.
- Can I visit Commewijne in one day?
Yes. The standard plantation day is seven to eight hours from Paramaribo and back by mid-afternoon, which leaves time for the 16:00 dolphin boat from the same jetty. Frederiksdorp also takes overnight guests.
- How much does a Commewijne day trip cost?
Published prices on 6 September 2026 ran from EUR 60 per person (SUforYou, boat, from) to EUR 85 (Orange bus tour from; Jenny Tours by car), with most boat days between EUR 65 and EUR 79. Frederiksdorp charges day visitors SRD 550 (international) if you go on your own.
