The Commewijne plantation day is the most widely sold excursion from Paramaribo, and it is a category rather than one company's product: on 6 September 2026 at least seven sellers published a version of it, from EUR 60 to EUR 85 per person. The shape is the same everywhere. A boat leaves the Leonsberg jetty in the morning (most operators say 08:30 or 09:00), crosses the Suriname River to Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam at the confluence, continues up the Commewijne past the old estate names, and stops at Frederiksdorp, where the director's house, the police post and the prison cells still stand together. Lunch is by the river. The afternoon is either Peperpot Nature Park, a former coffee and cocoa plantation grown back into forest, or the plantation at Rust en Werk, and the return is by boat or by road depending on the seller.
What differs is worth reading before you book: whether lunch and entrance fees are included, whether you are collected from your hotel or meet at the jetty, the minimum number of people before a departure runs (two, three or four, depending on the operator), and whether the crossing is a slow tent boat or a faster launch. Guiana dolphins live in the river mouth and are sometimes seen on the crossing; no operator can promise them, and the one that says so plainly is the one to trust on the rest.
Every seller we verified is listed below with its own price, terms and source. The organised day removes the one genuinely awkward part of Commewijne, the crossing itself, which since 1952 has run on demand rather than to a timetable.
