Short answer: five days covers the coast properly and the interior not at all. Spend day one walking the World Heritage inner city, day two on the Commewijne plantations, day three upriver at Jodensavanne with a swim at Overbridge, and days four and five on one night away — Brownsberg, Galibi if the turtles are nesting, or Fredberg. The order matters mainly because Paramaribo's museums shut at 14:00 and close on Mondays and Saturdays.
What should I do with five days in Suriname?
Five days covers the coast properly and the interior not at all. The order below is set by opening hours rather than geography: Paramaribo's museums shut at 14:00 and close on Mondays and Saturdays.

Day 1: the inner city on foot
The Historic Inner City of Paramaribo has been on the World Heritage List since 2002, described by UNESCO as a Dutch colonial town of the 17th and 18th centuries with its original street plan and more than 250 monuments intact. It is small, flat and free, and our walking route takes it in order.
Do the museum first, because it closes early. The Stichting Surinaams Museum inside Fort Zeelandia states Tuesday to Friday 09:00 to 14:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 14:00, closed on national public holidays, with a guided tour of the fort at 10:30 on Sundays for groups of about 15 to 20. It is shut on Mondays and Saturdays. The Centrale Markt on the Waterkant trades Monday to Saturday; we have no published opening and closing times for it, so treat it as a morning errand. If you want a guide, walks are published at EUR 22 by Jenny Tours, from EUR 35 by METS and at EUR 35 by Switi Tours (owner of this site), whose three-hour version starts at 16:00 and includes Fort Zeelandia entry — a late start that works best on a day you have already used the morning.
Historic Inner City of Paramaribo (UNESCO World Heritage site)
The historic centre of Paramaribo is a UNESCO World Heritage site inscribed in 2002, covering a former Dutch colonial town of the 17th and 18th centuries whose original street plan and over 250 monuments survive.
Fort Zeelandia & Stichting Surinaams Museum
A 17th-century Dutch pentagonal fortress on the Suriname River bank in central Paramaribo, now housing the Stichting Surinaams Museum with colonial-period collections and period rooms.
An arrival day with less energy in it can be swapped for the food tour, which starts at 15:30, or the 16:00 dolphin boat; both are in half-day excursions. If you only have three days, use three days in Paramaribo instead of this page.
Day 2: Commewijne by boat
The plantation belt across the river is the best full day within reach of the city. Boats leave Leonsberg between 08:30 and 09:00 and the day runs seven to eight hours, calling at Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, Frederiksdorp and then either Peperpot or the Rust en Werk estate; some sellers run the boat out and the road back. Six operators publish a price for it.
Check two things before you pay. Lunch, entrance fees and the return leg differ per seller. And Frederiksdorp charges its own day-visit contribution — SRD 550 for international visitors, SRD 350 for children — which covers entrance, a guided historical tour, the story museum and the pool; whether that sits inside your tour price is not published anywhere. The full route, including the cycling version and the Boni Trail, is in a day in Commewijne.
Commewijne plantation boat tour
A one-day boat and road excursion from Paramaribo through Commewijne's plantation belt, usually calling at Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, Frederiksdorp and Peperpot or Rust en Werk. Sold by at least six operators from about EUR 60 to EUR 85 per person as of September 2026.
Day 3: Jodensavanne, and a swim at Overbridge
Jodensavanne, about 50 km south of Paramaribo, is the country's second cultural World Heritage site, inscribed in 2023: the remains of a 17th-century Jewish plantation settlement, with the ruins of what is believed to be the earliest architecturally significant synagogue in the Americas, three cemeteries and several springs. Its foundation publishes neither hours nor an entrance fee, which is why it is visited on a tour.
Road tours run EUR 65 to EUR 95 and usually pair the site with Overbridge River Resort or Colakreek for lunch; Orange Travel's river version is a nine-hour day from EUR 125, leaving the waterfront between 08:00 and 09:00 and calling at Domburg on Sundays only, then Laarwijk, the site and Overbridge. Overbridge itself is fifteen minutes from the international airport and forty-five minutes from Paramaribo by its own account, and it is where the day turns into swimming rather than reading panels. The choice between this day and day two is set out in Commewijne or Jodensavanne.
Jodensavanne Archaeological Site
UNESCO-listed remains of a 17th-century Jewish settlement on the Suriname River, including the ruins of what is believed to be the earliest architecturally significant synagogue in the Americas and the older Cassipora Creek cemetery.
Overbridge River Resort
River resort on the Suriname River south of Paramaribo with a river beach and no flight involved, popular for weekend stays and as the lunch stop on Jodensavanne day tours.
Days 4 and 5: one night away, three ways
Everything worth an overnight is south or east, and each option is a different trip. Book this one before you arrive: these are the products with minimum group sizes and, in two cases, fixed departure days.
Brownsberg. Roughly 12,000 hectares of plateau in Brokopondo with trails, waterfalls and views over the reservoir, 112 km south of Paramaribo by Access Suriname Travel's account. Sold as a day trip of eleven to twelve hours with pick-ups between 05:30 and 07:30, which is the argument for staying: METS publishes a two-day Brownsberg and Afobaka trip from EUR 145 and Cardy Adventures a two-day Brownsberg at EUR 180. Accommodation on the Mazaroni plateau is run by STINASU and needs reserving in advance; STINASU's own website did not resolve when we checked, so book through an operator.
Brownsberg Nature Park
A nature park of roughly 12,000 hectares on a plateau in Brokopondo district south of Paramaribo, with rainforest trails, waterfalls and views over the Brokopondo reservoir.
Galibi, in season. Leatherback, green and olive ridley turtles nest at the Marowijne estuary, reached by road to Albina and then a boat crossing. Operators put the season at February to mid-July with a peak from April to June, or end of January to late July; WWF Guianas patrols its beaches February to July. Jenny Tours publishes a two or three-day trip from EUR 175, departing 08:30 from 't Vat with a minimum of two people and asking for bookings at least five days ahead; METS and Cardy publish from EUR 185, Orange Travel from EUR 225. Outside those months, do not build a trip around it. Nothing is guaranteed in any month.
Galibi Sea Turtle Nesting Tour
Seasonal overnight trip to the Galibi Nature Reserve at the mouth of the Marowijne River to watch sea turtles come ashore to nest. Reached by road to Albina and then about an hour by boat, with accommodation in or near the indigenous villages.
Fredberg. A rainforest mountain near the Upper Saramacca with a night on the summit, named by its sellers for the Guianan cock-of-the-rock. SUforYou publishes it from EUR 285 on fixed departure dates from two participants; Orange Travel from EUR 325 on fixed days, with a surcharge for departures outside them. The lodges deeper in — Awarradam, Palumeu, Kabalebo, Danpaati — are flights from Zorg en Hoop and belong to a longer trip; see jungle lodges compared.
Departure day
Most flights out of Suriname leave at night and hotels check out at midday, which leaves a gap. Colakreek, a blackwater creek in Para district near Zanderij, is the usual answer because it is close to the airport; Switi Tours (owner of this site) sells a day there at EUR 60 per person, 08:30 to 16:30. The park itself publishes no entrance fee and no opening hours that we could find, so arrange it through whoever drives you.
Colakreek Recreatiepark
Recreation park around a tannin-dark blackwater creek near Zanderij in the Para district: a longtime favourite swimming and picnic spot, with holiday cabins at the forest edge and a savannah education centre.
Before you go
Suriname charges an Entry Fee of USD 58 per entry including the service fee, per the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the rules and the multiple-entry voucher are in do you need a visa. Cash matters more here than cards: what things cost and at what exchange rate is in the Suriname price index, and withdrawing money is covered in banks and ATMs. Nothing on this route is walkable between towns, so read getting around before assuming a taxi will be there. Which months suit which trip is in the best time to visit.
What this page does not tell you
We have no hotel prices in this route, because none of the hotels in our database publishes a rack rate on its own site. We have no entrance fee for Peperpot, Brownsberg, Colakreek or Jodensavanne, and no confirmed hours for Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam. We do not know whether a given operator will run a two-person departure on your dates: minimums of two to six are normal and few sellers say what happens when they are not met. And we have not walked this exact five-day sequence ourselves; it is assembled from published times, prices and opening hours, each dated above.
Prices were read on the sellers' own pages on 6 September 2026; the Entry Fee was read at gov.sr on 24 August 2026 and opening hours carry their publisher in the text. Switi Tours is owned by the owner of this site and appears here only where it publishes a product, at the same published price as every other seller.
Common questions
- Is five days enough for Suriname?
Enough for the coast, not the interior. Five days covers Paramaribo, the Commewijne plantations, Jodensavanne and one night away at Brownsberg, Galibi in season or Fredberg. The interior river lodges need a flight from Zorg en Hoop and a longer trip.
- Which days should you avoid for museums in Paramaribo?
Mondays and Saturdays. The Stichting Surinaams Museum at Fort Zeelandia states Tuesday to Friday 09:00 to 14:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 14:00, closed on national public holidays. It closes at 14:00 on every day it opens, so museums are a morning activity here.
- What does a five-day trip to Suriname cost?
Excursions alone, using published per-person prices read in September 2026: a guided city walk from EUR 22, a Commewijne boat day from EUR 60, Jodensavanne from EUR 65 by road, and a two-day Brownsberg trip from EUR 145. The Entry Fee is a separate USD 58 per entry.
