Short answer: the day trips that are genuinely day trips are within about an hour of the city: Commewijne across the river (from EUR 60, the most sellers and the lowest minimums), Jodensavanne upriver (Suriname's second cultural UNESCO site, from EUR 65 by road, EUR 125 by boat), Overbridge (from EUR 75), Colakreek near the airport, Peperpot for a morning, and the sunset dolphin boat from Leonsberg (from EUR 27.50, the only one that fits after a full day in town). Which day trip should I choose?
Commewijne has the most sellers and the lowest entry price at EUR 60; the sunset dolphin boat at EUR 27.50 is the only trip that starts late enough to follow a full day in town; Jodensavanne is the one UNESCO site of the set; and Galibi, Bigi Pan and Fredberg are sold as trips but need a night.

What the table means, trip by trip
Commewijne is the one to do first. It is flat, close, and three anchors sit within a short ride of each other: Peperpot, the only site here with published hours (08:00–16:00, every day), the open-air museum inside the old fortress at the confluence, and the restored plantation at Frederiksdorp, which is also the only site that publishes its own visitor fees. Nine sellers published a day at EUR 60 to EUR 85, and two of them run from two people. Commewijne plantation boat tour
A one-day boat and road excursion from Paramaribo through Commewijne's plantation belt, usually calling at Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, Frederiksdorp and Peperpot or Rust en Werk. Sold by at least six operators from about EUR 60 to EUR 85 per person as of September 2026.
Peperpot Nature Park
A nature park of about 820 hectares on a former coffee and cocoa plantation in Commewijne, a short drive from Paramaribo, with walking trails through regrown forest and old plantation planting still visible.
Openluchtmuseum Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam
An open-air museum inside the walls of Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam in Commewijne, at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers opposite Paramaribo, with former prison cells and wartime artillery on the grounds.
Plantage Resort Frederiksdorp
A restored 18th-century coffee and later cocoa plantation on the Commewijne River, designated a monument in 2004 and now operating as a resort with a small district story museum and a heritage walking trail.
Jodensavanne is the country's third World Heritage property, and second cultural one, inscribed September 2023, and most travel writing has not caught up. Its foundation publishes neither hours nor a fee, so it is done as a tour, and the tours commonly lunch and swim at Overbridge, which is why those two share a day. Road versions cost EUR 65 to EUR 95 and need three people; the boat versions EUR 125 to EUR 150 and need four. Jodensavanne Archaeological Site
UNESCO-listed remains of a 17th-century Jewish settlement on the Suriname River, including the ruins of what is believed to be the earliest architecturally significant synagogue in the Americas and the older Cassipora Creek cemetery.
Overbridge River Resort
River resort on the Suriname River south of Paramaribo with a river beach and no flight involved, popular for weekend stays and as the lunch stop on Jodensavanne day tours.
The dolphin boat is the cheapest published outing and the only one that fits after a full day in town: boats leave Leonsberg between 16:00 and 16:30 and come back after sunset. Five sellers, EUR 27.50 to EUR 60; the estuary population is wild and monitored, and no seller can promise a sighting. All of it is in dolphin tours from Paramaribo.
Sunset and dolphins boat trip from Leonsberg
A three- to five-hour afternoon boat trip from the Leonsberg jetty down the Suriname River to the estuary where Guiana dolphins live, returning at sunset. Sold by at least five Paramaribo operators from EUR 27.50 to EUR 60 per person as of September 2026; sightings are never guaranteed.
Colakreek is about the airport. Most flights out leave at night and hotel check-out is at midday; a blackwater creek near the terminal is a better waiting room than the departure hall. No official fee or hours are published for the creek itself. Switi Tours (owner of this site) sells an eight-hour day there at EUR 60 with lunch and entry included, and METS combines it with Jodensavanne; otherwise plan it through whoever drives you.
Colakreek Recreatiepark
Recreation park around a tannin-dark blackwater creek near Zanderij in the Para district: a longtime favourite swimming and picnic spot, with holiday cabins at the forest edge and a savannah education centre.
Braamspunt is the turtle beach nearest the city, an evening by boat in season rather than a day, and eroding fast; it belongs with Galibi in best wildlife tours in Suriname.
Braamspunt
A sand spit on the east bank of the mouth of the Suriname River, about 15 km from Paramaribo, where leatherback, green and olive ridley turtles nest between roughly February and August. Reached by boat from the Leonsberg jetty; the beach is eroding fast.
Brownsberg is a real day, and a long one. Operators sell it as eleven to twelve hours with roughly four in a vehicle, part of it on unpaved road, and a walk to a waterfall; the park sits at about five hundred metres on the reservoir's western edge. The cheapest published day is METS's from EUR 68; Jenny Tours, Cardy, Orange and the reseller are at EUR 95, Switi Tours (owner of this site) at EUR 95 for eleven hours from a 05:30 pick-up, Access from EUR 105. The park's managing foundation has been in caretaker status since 2020 and the government's own guidance points visitors at licensed operators. If the wildlife is the reason, Cardy's two-day version (EUR 180) or METS's (from EUR 145) puts you there in the early hours that matter.
Brownsberg Nature Park
A nature park of roughly 12,000 hectares on a plateau in Brokopondo district south of Paramaribo, with rainforest trails, waterfalls and views over the Brokopondo reservoir.
Three that are not day trips. Galibi's turtles come ashore at night in a season the operators place between February and mid-July (WWF's patrols run February to July); it is two or three days by road and boat. Bigi Pan is in the far west, reached by boat from Nieuw Nickerie, and the two- and three-day programmes are the practical ones even though Jenny Tours lists a day at EUR 125. Fredberg is a mountain you sleep on. All three are worth the night; the lodges are compared in jungle lodges compared and the seasons in when to visit.
Galibi Sea Turtle Nesting Tour
Seasonal overnight trip to the Galibi Nature Reserve at the mouth of the Marowijne River to watch sea turtles come ashore to nest. Reached by road to Albina and then about an hour by boat, with accommodation in or near the indigenous villages.
Bigi Pan
A coastal wetland and Multiple-Use Management Area in Nickerie district, in the far west of Suriname, known for scarlet ibis, flamingos and large numbers of migratory shorebirds. Visited by boat from Nieuw Nickerie, normally as a two- or three-day trip from Paramaribo.
Fredberg
Rainforest mountain near the Upper Saramacca River known for extraordinary biodiversity, including the Guianan cock-of-the-rock, with multi-day tours that let you sleep on the summit.

Getting out of town
None of these is walkable and there is no international ride-hailing app. You either book a tour that includes transport, hire a car (Avis at the airport, Hertz via Realcar in town), or arrange a car and driver through your accommodation.
