Frederiksdorp is a restored plantation on the Commewijne River, established in 1747 by Johan Friedrich Knoffel as a coffee estate and switched to cocoa in 1873 when coffee prices fell. In 2004 it was designated the first monument and heritage site outside Paramaribo.

Two things on the site are worth going for. The Boni Trail, opened in 2022, is an educational walk about slavery that follows the eighteenth-century freedom fighter Boni — a serious piece of interpretation rather than a decorative feature. And the restored director's house holds a story museum built from the accounts of people from North Commewijne.

Frederiksdorp is both a heritage site and a working resort, which is why it turns up in accommodation listings as well as day-trip itineraries. We file it as an attraction because the plantation and the trail are the reason to come; if you are booking a room, expect the same place.

Nothing here is a short hop from the city: this is a river trip in Commewijne, usually taken as part of a longer day.
